The prestigious awards are in their 27th year and open to all Public Works Projects within the HKSAR
Award for Landscape Design which reflected and enhanced the iconic Architecture of Cesar Pelli. I worked with a multi-disciplinary team, including Ove Arup, under the Project Management of Henderson Land.
I led the team which won the Outstanding Design Award. The design proposed a contemporary upgrade to the waterfront promenade between Star Ferry and Hong Kong Coliseum with features including a laser light tower, giant fountain, electric rail system, cafes, water gardens and a multipurpose event area.
Major infrastructure along the North Lantau Expressway. My roles include:
Private Sculpture Park and Villa Garden within a mountainous jungle. My roles included:
Kai Tak Comprehensive Redevelopment (Former Hong Kong International Airport), Hong Kong
I recently arranged and inspected the Landscape implementation of approximately 1700 trees and 1,500,000 shrubs in the New Territories of Hong Kong, including Sai Kung, Sha Tin and TKO. The Project, arranged by the Hong Kong Government (HKSAR CEDD) was designed by ACLA-Hyder JV, in which I was involved in both design and documentation. Liaison with Stakeholders and Government Departments was an important component of the Projects success.
I transferred to Macau to oversee the implementation of landscape hard and soft works on a massive 5/F podium. Soft works included nursery checking and site planting of several hundred trees, sourced throughout Southern China, imported soil mix preparations and importation, irrigation of all types, and drainage.
Hard works included a massive Art Deco swimming pool with complementing column lights, cabanas and F&B outlets, granite walls and paving, a Lazy River with GRC themed rock work, waterfalls, bridges and slides, an outdoor nightclub, and multi-functional lawns for weddings, concerts and corporate events, all set within luxuriant tropical planting.
The Project opened on time and within budget.
I worked with ACLA since 2005 as a Senior Landscape Architect and was then promoted to Associate in 2006. I worked predominantly on PRC projects including the award winning World Financial Centre in Beijing, and many prestigious residential developments and hotels
Prominent schemes on which I worked included the following:
I was also involved in tourism studies for the Government of Morocco.
I transferred to The Venetian Macau in 2008 to work as a Senior Project Manager for theming and landscape design for ongoing development.
I was invited back to ACLA as a Principal Landscape Architect to work on the Design, Development and Construction of the Greening Master Plans for the Urban Areas of Hong Kong which culminated in 2 years on-site experience implementing the works in Kowloon City, Sham Shiu Po, Kwun Tong and Wong Tai Sing.
For this role I became a Certified Arborist and gained considerable knowledge in sub-tropical planting design.
Thereafter I led the team for design and documentation of hard and soft landscape works for the upcoming Greening Master Plans for Yuen Long, Tuen Mun, and Tin Shui Wai. Aside from writing the award winning Brief and thereafter the Inception Report, my role included detailed site appraisals, public consultations and presentations and liaison with numerous Government Departments. Implementation of the planting designs was completed at the end of 2018.
As Senior Project Manager for the Venetian Macau, I was involved in Theming and Landscape Design for Hotels and the Shopping Malls on the prestigious Cotai Strip, with a focus on the Sheraton Cascading River Mall and Paradise Gardens.
I worked as the Senior Resident Landscape Architect for Hong Kong Disneyland Infrastructure. This included the Water Recreation Centre at Inspiration Lake, Arboretum, Entry Gateway, Road and Pedestrian Signage, Road and Pedestrian Lighting, Pedestrian Subway, Approach Roads, Fountains, Footpaths and Utilities, as well as Public Pier and Public Transport Interchange. I headed up a team of several staff and was responsible for overseeing all landscape hardworks for the project and ensuring all elements were delivered on time and on budget.
Having previously worked with Urbis in 1998-2000, I was invited back to prepare the 'Enhancement of Hong Kong Highways Department Details Manual'. This included streetscape design and calming, pedestrianisation and rationalisation of all the street signage including installing updated street name plates with numbers, pedestrian railings, paving, street furniture and associated urban design elements in Hong Kong. Study Areas included TST and SOHO. Implementation of the updated design criteria was undertaken in Lang Kwai Fung (paving, railings, roads and signage).
I thereafter focused on Planning Department’s Landscape Value Mapping of Hong Kong to establish the baseline condition of the territory's landscape resources. The main objective of the consultancy study was to provide a systematic reference framework to facilitate landscape assessment and broad environmental assessment of major projects at a territorial level.
The main deliverables were a landscape character map and a comprehensive landscape resource database for the whole of Hong Kong.
The Study focused more on studies in related disciplines, such as:
Specific Landscapes and Landscape Features included:
Features felt to detract from landscape value included:
Here I supervised tourism studies for Hong Kong & China. This included masterplanning for new town development. Projects included enhancement of Stanley as tourist destination, South Lamma for eco-tourism and The Central Reclamation Phase 3 (CR3) and Chonming Island, Shanghai, to work on the Urban Design for Luchaogang New Town Conceptual Plan.
I specialised in Landscape and Visual Impact Assessments in accordance with the guidelines of the Hong Kong Environmental Impact Assessment Ordinance (EIAO). These included alternative sites for the Cheung Kwan O Landfill, The Central Reclamation Phase 3, the Route 7 road link between Kennedy Town and Aberdeen and various large-scale coastal reclamation housing developments including Sok Kwu Wan in Lamma Island and Belchers Bay in Kennedy Town.
Here I worked on the Grand Horizon Residential Development alongside the Rambler Channel at Tsing Yi Island. I designed the hard and soft landscape works including water features, lighting, paving, feature walls and pavilions. The project also included the design of an adjacent promenade and childrens playground.
I worked on the team for the White Rose Development in Leeds. The project was the rehabilitation of a previously contaminated brownfield site. This included design of the Hardworks and Softworks including pedestrian and street lighting, car parks with several hundred semi-mature trees, natural stone clad retaining walls, an artificial lake and the associated cantilevered boardwalks. I also worked on the Lisbon Expo '98 in Portugal. My focus was the Vasco de Gama Centre. Additionally I was involved in Landscape Surveys for the Ministry of Defence throughout Germany as part of the British withdrawal.
This was my first position after graduation. I worked on the rehabilitation of several ex-colliery mining sites on the River Weir in Sunderland including The Monk Weirmouth Colliery. We utilised landscape mitigation measures and design to implement natural features including woodland and scenic waterfront footpaths. I was also involved in the planting design for the approach roads and hotel courtyards for Disneyland, Paris.
